    The Basilica (World Setting)

Post  ComradeHavok on Sun Mar 20, 2011 12:02 am

The Basilica is a world setting that I've been working with off and on for about two years now. Thusfar I've made two attempts to run a campaign based in the world, and both ended prematurely.

So, I'm going to try to compile what I can of my notes on the Basilica here. I welcome comments, criticism and suggestions.

    -------

    A Brief History

Two hundred years ago, four heroes set forth from humble beginnings. They were the rake Kazemaru, the monk Godric Shatterfist, the knight Marena Xavier and the scholar Adolfus Thracian. They began their adventure seeking a band of villagers captured by marauding slavers, but which would eventually lead them into the bowels of the underground realm that is simply known as the Labyrinth. What truly transpired within the Labyrinth remains unknown to this day, but when the heroes emerged they brought with them the miracles of both science and magic.

What follows is a golden age that many refer to as the Old Order. In this age, all manner of marvels were created by blending science and magic. Global transporation and communications systems, orbital flight technology, practical teleportation, contragravity technology, force fields, gene therapy and so on.

However, this era would come to an end with the beginning of the Magitech Wars. If any records of this conflict still exist, they will lie within the archives of the Basilica. However, what is known is that this conflict devastated much of the world. The overload of magical energy created vast contaminated zones and reduces the entire world to rubble.

It was from these ashes that the Basilica emerged. Possessing much of the smae magitech wielded before the war, they soon came dominate most of the world that wasn't too contaminated for permanent settlement. Early victories in the Dwarven War and the Arulean War would see their dominance secured.

However, they would soon learn that their rule wasn't as absolue as they believed. The Commonwealth of Lusteria, first founded some fifty years ago by a band of wasteland scientists, redeveloped the technology of the past. Assured in their belief that magitech must be expunged from the world before the rest becomes contaminated, they developed scientific techology that surpassed the Basilica's own understanding, while completely shunning arcane research.

A rivalry would develop between the two factions, that would culminate in the Lusterian War about tens years ago. The Basilica would be humbled by the Lusterians, after their greatest weaponb was neutralised, and their armies fought to a standstill by the staunch Lusterian defenders.

    Factions

    The Basilica

The Basilica is arguably the most powerful single organisation in the world, with vast fleets and mighty armies that can spread the will of the Great Houses and the Ministry to any part of the globe within a matter of hours. While nominally a theocratic organisations, most of its ruling members are hardly devout and make no attempt to hide that fact.

The Basilica's power is split between the Great Houses and the Ministry. Administrative duties fall to the Ministry, while military matters are handled by the Great Houses. All of these organisations ultimately swear fealty to the Patrician. However, as the Patrician has not made a public appearance in decades, the ministry and the great houses largely govern themselves.

The most famous facet of the Basilican military are the Knightly Orders. Many ride into battle upon bioengineered dragons while clad in magitech power armour and wielding devastating thermal swords and plasma crossbows. They serve as elite shocktroopers and field officers for the Basilican military.

However, the true power of the Basilica lies in its airship fleets, and its superweapon, the orbital laser platform "Sword of the Heavens". These are what allows the Basilica to bring its power to bear at any point in the world within a day.

    Lusteria

Founded in the aftermath of the Magitech Wars by a council of former scientists, Lusteria seeks to promote pure technology over magitech as a means of saving the world from the poison of mana contamination. Through this focus on science, they have created technological marvels that surpass even the Basilica. Annihilation reactors, cloning facilities, cybernetic enhancement, ect.

Since the end of the Lusterian War ten years ago, a cold war has simmered away between Lusteria and the Basilica. IT was the genius of Dr. Horace Greeley in the first war when he built the Greeley Cannon that saved the Lusterian lines from destruction by the Sword of the Heavens. However, the Lusterians know that such a trick won't work a second time. Once the Sword of the Heavens is operable again, they can expect a renewed offensive from a wiser enemy.

    The Liberation Army

A recent development in the politics of the continent, the Liberation Army is a confederation of various bandit warlords and waster settlements under the rule of Field Marshal Aytac Batar. He believes that the answer to the perils facing the world cannot be found with magic or technology, but through the brutal efficiency of industry, and the determination of fighting men and women. In the territories of the Liberation Army, countless factories burn day and night producing weapons of war. Many of these weapons may seem laughably outdated by Basilican and Lusterian standards, but it is that underestimation that the Field Marshal hopes to take advantage of in the war to come.
