Or for correctness, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan.

Also, I guess Cowboy Bebop is a "must watch" too.

    Perhaps what we should do is take a look at titles released each year;
identify what we're seen between us; then work out which ones we think were best?

That's probably because it's the "Law of Ueki" and not of "Uki". And "Arakawa Under the Bridge". Anyway adding to the list, in no particular order:

    The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
    Samurai Champloo
    Paranoia Agent
    Death Note
    Bounen no Xam'd
    FLCL
    Code Geass
    Legend of the Galactic Heroes
    Genshiken
    Detroit Metal City
    Bokurano
    Baccano!
    Ghost in the Shell
    Read or Die
    Toradora!
    Trigun

Tenchi GXP is good if you like harem comedy, I personally liked it alot.

Hajime no Ippo is awesome if you like boxing (its more interesting than real-life boxing, I assure you.)

EXACTLY! It's what I'm trying to tell some of my other friends here, but none of em ever believe me! They take one look and it's "Oh, it's a sports anime. Instasuckage!" but I'm like "Hey wait, you at least gotta TRY watching it past the first episode! Aww come ON!"

And yes, I know. K-On is a No, but it's just so kawaii, I couldn't really help myself. It's just like watching Azumanga Daioh! But without the wackiness that is Osaka. And the silly High School hijinks. Okay, it's fairly mediocre in comparison, but enjoyable for the mellow high school life style if that catches your fancy. I enjoy just about most kinds of anime, so yeah...

And Tenchi GXP is set in the Tenchi OAV universe. And you will understand why I recommended Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure after seeing GXP. And Isekai no Seikishi no Monogatari also has ties into Tenchi as well, but it's less overt. But here's a nice bonus about it: the episodes are 45 mins long, so you get a good bit of content per episode.

But yeah, that list is just a small list of the animes I've enjoyed a good bit, but I do not consider them to be a MUST WATCH. Anyway, a bit about some of those that you're having questions about.

Eden of the East is an awesome psychological thriller about this guy who has no memories, holding a pistol and a cellphone, and is naked in front of the White House (and no idea why he's naked and holding a pistol and cellphone in front of the White House). Oh, and his cellphone has a balance of over 8 billion yen that he can use to do...just about anything. It's interesting. And hard to describe.

Sentou Yousei Yukikaze is a jet fighter anime which has like some of the sweetest looking CG dogfights ever. But most of the rest is fairly bad filler crap. At least if you're looking at it from the perspective of a jet fighter anime. It's up to you, but the action scenes are awesome. And only 5 episodes long. And it has one of the sweetest explosions of a giant ship blowing up I have EVER SEEN!

Keroro Gunsou is a silly anime about a group of alien frogs that are trying to take over the world...but are horribly inept. Lots of transformations and silliness going around.

Ride Back is actually not really that GREAT of an anime, but it's a pseudo-mecha type of anime. It's about these motorcycles that can turn into a standing mecha form, and the rider stays up on top. And the story follows this girl who was a ballerina but had an accident and could no longer play as one. And so she discovers the Ridebacks. Interesting up for a few episodes, but not really worth investing into unless you decide for yourself.

Grenadier is a gunslinger type of anime...kinda. With this girl who wields a 6-shooter and has an AWESOME reload style! Bosom-fling insta-reload ftw!

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha is a magical girl series unlike what you're expecting. It is actually fairly good! And it's actually geared more towards a male audience, and there isn't constant repeated transformation scenes. Actually, I think the first transformation scene is ever only shown a total of 3 times spread over the first two whole seasons. That should help convince you, hopefully. Sailor Moon this AIN'T! And pretty cool action that gets better in the second season.

Tetsuwan Birdy Decode is a good series about an alien police girl who accidentally kills this guy on Earth while trying to arrest another alien criminal. So in order to save him, she has to stick his mind in her head and share her body (she transforms/disguises her body into his). Another kinda hard to describe anime, but I liked it. The second season had some pretty weird fight scenes that look horribly rushed, but kinda understandable mostly because of the sheer speeds everythings going at. Yes the ending of that one was rushed.

I'll post more explanations a bit later, I gotta head out to work. Hope this helps clear some of that up!

Black Lagoon's pretty essential for fans of action. The dub isn't bad either. Though it gets less shooty around the end of the second season.
